James G. Cook, Health First Access Center

Sabathani Community Center is pleased to announce the “grand opening” of the James G. Cook, Health First Access Center.

Commissioner, Peter McLaughlin and Sabathani Executive, Ernie Johnson cut the ceremonial ribbon on June 9 th as part of our Up and Rising community festival and health fair.

The Health first Access Center is the result of six months work of Sabathani's Health Initiative Committee, staffed by Art Serotoff , Health and Wellness Manager and Ms. Ora Hokes, Community Health Advocate. Many tenant and community organizations participated.

The Initiative Goal is:
"To increase health care and healthy behaviors for disparate communities in South Central Minneapolis , focusing on the Central and Bryant neighborhoods".

“First Access” describes how we use Sabathani's position in the community to improve families' and individuals' health outcomes.  We know that our community has some of the highest health disparities in the city.  We also know that Sabathani is a place that has credibility, trust and respect in the community.  People come here because they know they will be treated in a respectful and dignified manner.  The “health first access center” is a place where neighbors gain “first access” to health resources.  This is a space in the building where people would come in and the staff in the room help identify the issue, provide some immediate medical care and/or consultation as well as a location for health information and education.  Throughout everything we do, we also want to include a service where we provide guidance and actual assistance in applying for public programs for which people are eligible.

Several partners have played critical roles in helping us to get to this point. These are: Park Nicollet Foundation, Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Minnesota, YWCA, Women's Wellness Program, YMCA, Blaisdell Branch, Hennepin County Resource Development and the University of Minnesota Extension Service .

Pediatric Dental Clinic

The first service we are preparing to provide is dental care for children. Participants in your program are most welcome to use this service. The provider is Children's Dental Services. This non-profit organization provides low cost and free dental services in various locations throughout the Twin Cities area.
