HISTORY AND OVERVIEW

Sabathani is a multi-service organization serving the needs of diverse families in four program areas:

Building Strong Healthy Families
Creating School Success for Children and Teens
Keeping Seniors Active and Healthy
Community-based Health Resources

Our mission is to provide people of all ages and cultures with essential resources that inspire them to improve their lives and build a thriving community.

Sabathani Community Center was founded in 1966 by concerned residents who wanted to serve the growing migration of African American youths in south Minneapolis.  At the time, there were few and inadequate facilities to serve their needs.

The initial concept of Sabathani quickly outgrew its single purpose.  Residents requested broader and more direct services, especially those addressing basic needs.

After operating in a number of locations in South Minneapolis, Sabathani took a huge leap forward in 1979 when it settled in the former Bryant Junior High School building.  In a large outpouring of community voice, neighborhood residents organized to lobby the city and the public schools to sell the site to Sabathani.  After much activity, the community’s efforts were successful.

Sabathani had obtained and renovated the school building on E. 38th Street with the goal of creating a focal point for community identity, empowerment and social change.  Organizers of this grassroots effort envisioned a place where residents could gather where they were welcome, fellowship, build community, conduct business and receive programs and services that would move people forward.

Today Sabathani serves a culturally diverse population of more than 24,000 people throughout South Minneapolis and beyond.  Individuals and families come to Sabathani for a food shelf, free clothing and household goods, after-school programming for children and youths, a senior center and health resources for the entire family.

Sabathani collaborates with up to 40 other nonprofits in the building whose services complement its mission. Space is also available for events such as concerts, plays, conferences, banquets, graduations and more.  Sabathani employs staff in executive management, human resources, program management, finance, fund development and facilities services.  For more than 40 years, Sabathani has served as an anchor in the community and the place serving people.
